After the jump.

So I graduated just a bit over ten years ago, and I really hadn’t every went back on campus. Today we took my high school age nephew to the campus to help get him jazzed about higher education.

I couldn’t believe how much had changed. Not just buildings having been replaced but even the student body. Gone were the hackey sackers, no Frisbees to be seen, no political activism. Student union was quiet. Just students going about the learning business. I had so many happy memories of days past.

Honestly felt like going back to an old house that’s been knocked down and rebuilt.

Man, I thought ASU was supposed to be lively.

I graduated from U of Illinois this year, and the quad was always full of frisbee throwers, hackey sackers, activists, and other stuff like dogs, traveling preachers, and sporadic acoustic guitarists. At least when the weather was nice.

I am currently in a small town called Pine, AZ. It’s my first time in AZ and I love it.

Knocked down but rebuilt for the better for sure. I graduated about a year after you, military paid the bills but set me back a few years on my degree at ASU. Recently took a ride down the mall with the wife, I was blown away by the changes. Apache is lined with high rise lofts and dorms, biomed complex has just about disappeared the lemon st. entrance to campus. I’m getting old so I seek salvation at the one true thing that never changes near campus, Casey Moores haha. Main has definitely lost it’s charm tho, can’t quiet put my finger on it but it feels more corporate now, not as many mom and pops around campus like their used to be. Moved to a more grown up neighborhood so I don’t get down there much, but it’s still a great place for a young guy or girl to go to school on the cheap and get your kicks out before having to commit to the grown up life. Glad there’s another AZ oppo here, you’ll have to tear up to Jerome and down Oak Creek with me some time bud.

Glad you’re enjoying your stay so far. Highway 260 west of Pine will take you across the I17 to 89A and Jerome, which I can’t recommend more, both for the drive and the unique history/location. It’s a switchback mining town built on stilts along the side of the mtn. The singer from tool lives up there and has a winery in town that’s worth checking out on main street. There used to be a historic rally that ran up the mtn back in the 30s, pretty cool. If you’re on vacation I can’t recommend it enough. Along the way there’s a waterfall in Camp Verde along the 260 called Fossil Creek, if you’re into that sort of thing. East of Pine on 260 is the White Mtn rim, there’s a very cool fish hatchery, Tonto Creek hatchery, I don’t think it closes until the snow comes so def cool to check out if you’re gonna be up there for a bit. I’m your local AZ historian, so if you want some more suggestions while you’re visiting let me know, I could keep you busy out here for the next 10yrs there’s so many cool things to check out. Also 89A through Oak Creek in Sedona is probably the most fun and scenic road in the state, if you like a more spirited drive don’t go on the weekend, try to aim for a less busy day of the week.

I was worried for a second that this was the school offering a Transgender Studies major. But it’s the University of Arizona, not ASU.

How do they get 60 credit hours out of that?

I actually work about a mile from ASU but I never bothered to go back. Like you said it’s a better campus but the changes are shocking. There’s a few AZ oppos around don’t know why we never do a meet.

It used to be at least. Maybe I just went at the wrong time. Very sad.

We’re here for the weekend, so we had to go to the Grand Canyon. Much more beautiful than I thought. Sadly, we don’t have that much time to go driving, which saddens me deeply, but the road we took up to Flagstaff from Pine was fantastic. Driving adjacent to Mormon Lake was a wonderful experience. I don’t remember the name for that road, unfortunately.

We’re only here for the weekend as we are attending a wedding, and we are visiting from Raleigh, NC.
